U19 Open: Round 1: 1-3 Round 2: 0-3
U16 : Round 1: 2-2
Coach Bruce Colson:U19 Elite started uncharacteristically slowly in the loss to Marvin Ridge. Our first loss for 4 years so a hard one to take. The lads picked themselves up nicely to soundly defeat Wando Warriors and then Raleigh Rattlesnakes to close the day out. With only 9 players the boys had to put in lots of minutes. Some great stand out performances from many of the lads.
Isaiah lead the way on offense and defense and the Guerrero brothers also making big plays in all the games. New to rugby Josiah also made great hits on defense to secure the outside channels.
We will head into the final weekend welcoming back injured and away players sitting ready to pounce.
U19 Open had two games go against them with some important momentum shifts that were out of their control. Each game had them well in the mix for wins by half time….but it wasn’t to be.
Jack Tipton threw his light frame valiantly into every contact and epitomized the overall effort of the team. EJ was everywhere and Ferg got himself on the score sheet several times with strong running and good lines…put into space well by Jack Raybourn and EJ.
U16 boys had a great start defeating our major competition across all divisions (Marvin Ridge) with a somewhat un-7’s like approach of hard straight running and pick and go’s more akin to 15’s rugby. It worked and gave the lads lots of confidence for the rest of the day. New to rugby Eli was powerful on attack and D as was the dynamic duo Bobby and Tua.
Aaron finished off every opportunity given to him during the day with his electric gas on the outside.
The U16’s have great balance across the team and all the boys contributed and complemented each other extremely well. A little shout out to Micah who just joined us and threw himself into everything with serious vigor!
Girls:
U16
Round 1 : 2-2 Round 2: 2-3
Coach Colson: In the first tournament, Individual players performances were prominent with successful results. First game against Redhawks was fast and furious. They ran the whole field, strong defensive tackles and got right back up and repeated! Zatie’s conversion kick successfully added points. On the Attack with Olivia, Charlie, Zatie and Adriana powering through carries & tries.
Game against Cardinals Gold, Brooke, Lottie,Zatie was quick on the attack with Charlie who were dynamic. . Adriana played centre and took every opportunity to engage in tackles. Brooke put in great efforts as Hooker in defense, in the scrum and line out . Charlotte @Lotte and Cassandra@CJ both made great tackles , very new to rugby they defended the wing and built on their confidence. Breanne did a great job as a scrum half and courageously tackled bigger players than herself. Olivia led the pack as Captain with high energy.
In Round 2, we only had 6 players and received support players from Cobras, Charlotte Cardinals & Sandhills Sharks. The performance from our 6 players were outstanding! Each player pushed through and demonstrated teamwork and self-confidence.Notable milestones, Lotte scored her first try. Breanne played an entire game and was an absolute tank! Brooke led as Captain in the 3rd game as Olivia was injured in the 2nd game against Southern Pines. Olivia kept the team spirits up! CJ chased whoever moved and Adriana pounced on the ball like her life depended on it.
U19
Round 1: 0-2
Round 2: 0-3
Coach Colson: I am proud of the U19 girls for their continuous pursuit to improve skills and performance as a team. We faced a tough challenge in Round 1 against faster opponents.
We kept at it, some girls came earlier to work on speed, fitness and strength.
We simplify play and stuck to basics, encourage more ball movement through touch rugby.
They all practiced kicking, line out & scrums as our numbers are so tight, everyone had to cover for each other.
In Round 2, our team was on fire! There were more physical at the breakdown, team Captain Isabella Hoffman @Bitty put in well placed grubber kicks which we practiced only last week, chased and powered through tackles. Team engagement was evident in these next 3 games. Despite the results, each players performance has improved significantly.
Notable milestone, Mikayla scored her first try!
